I’m happy to be starting my seventh year of teaching as the 8th grade Current Events teacher and 7th grade Leadership Development & Career Exploration teacher at Tri-West Middle School. I also sponsor Spell Bowl every fall and supervise video announcements in the afternoons.
I grew up in South Bend, IN, and graduated from LaSalle High School in 2002. I attended Ball State University to get my Bachelor of Science in social studies education, specializing in geography, psychology, and sociology. After I graduated and received my teaching license in 2007, I was hired as a substitute teacher for the Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation in Mishawaka and the South Bend Community School Corporation. It was a wonderful experience and it solidified my desire to teach middle and high school students. I was hired by the North West Hendricks School Corporation in 2008 and have been there ever since.
Having this job has allowed me to grow both personally and professionally. Each year I become increasingly creative, passionate, and ambitious about the topics and lessons I teach. I want my students to learn in a 21st century environment. I like to engage them with Socratic discussions, creative projects, device-based activities, websites, social media, and Promethean Board activities. I am taking a course with IUPUI this summer and reading two books to further my education in this area — Creating Innovators by Tony Wagner and Why School? by Will Richardson.
